CPL Online launch Data Protection e-learning course

Thursday, 09 March 2017

CPL Online, the largest provider of online training in the licensed hospitality sector, has announced the immediate launch of the new Data Protection e-learning course. The aim of the course is to help learners understand data protection law and preserve the security and confidentiality of personal data.

Data Protection has been developed in the ‘Next Generation’ format and is a brand new addition to the company’s vast e-learning selection. Since data protection laws cover all types of data, from staff records to CCTV footage, the course is highly recommended for individuals who are responsible for managing data within a business.

The relevance of the Data Protection Act has grown significantly over the past 19 years, with the need for data processing increasing day by day. According to a UK government survey from 2015, 90% of large organisations and 74% of SMEs reported a security breach. In total, this amounts to an estimated £1.4bn in regulatory fines.

Andrew Rannard, CPL Online’s account director, said: “If business owners or employees aren’t familiar with data protection law, there are many conditions that you might not expect. CCTV surveillance is a common example where businesses have fallen short of the law. Using CCTV involves several data protection conditions, which ranges from tape erasure to registering with the Information Commissioner’s Office. Failing to comply with any of these can lead to consequences for businesses.”

Rannard added: “In the space of 45 minutes, the Data Protection course covers all key areas by taking learners step-by-step in accessible bite-sized modules. It’s a simple way to learn how to comply with the law, manage personal data and safeguard operations effectively. The new course is an example of our ability to provide dynamic training on contemporary challenges, which businesses face day in, day out.”

The learning content focuses on driving user engagement by incorporating mobile learning, language translation, and gamification and video/animation. Companies also have the advantage of monitoring staff training progress, which includes suspicious activity and real-time reporting and insights. Data Protection has also been accredited by the CPD Standards Office. This enables CPD professionals to request a ‘Certificate of Attendance’, which is then recorded in CPD requirements.
